“If we have a true folk singer, it is Chava Alberstein,” wrote Yediot Aharonot, Israel’s largest daily newspaper, about Alberstein, naming her the most important woman musician in Israel’s history.

Chava Alberstein has been an interpreter of World Music ever since her very first public appearance when she performed a song in French, one in Spanish, another in Yiddish and a gospel standard in English. Chava has released 54 albums of which 40 are in Hebrew, six of which have won the Kinor David Prize, Israel’s equivalent of the Grammy. Seven of her albums are in Yiddish, and one is in English, featuring standards ranging from George Gershwin to John Lennon and Paul McCartney. A dozen of her records have gone gold, six platinum, and one triple platinum.

The profits from the DIG commemorative concert on the 10th anniversary of Yitkhak Rabin’s death will go to the German-Israeli Summer Camp in 2006 organised by the Aktion Sühnezeichen Friedensdienste and the Deutsch-Israelischen Jugendforums. At the camp, young Germans come together with Jewish and Arab Israelis.
