The film uses the backdrop of ethnic and religious tensions in Thailand’s predominantly Muslim town of Baytong, which borders Malaysia, as its main context. "Baytong" tells the tale of a 27-year-old Buddhist monk, who has to leave his monastery and become surrogate parent to his seven-year-old niece who is orphaned by an Islamist terrorist attack.
