Zbigniew Herbert does not follow the writers’ imperative: "show your wounds". He felt it to be romantic and self-centred. Beyond the artist stretches a heavy, dark, but real world. We must not stop believing that we can express this world in words. Herbert studied law, philosophy and art history. His travels to antiquity produced his best prose.
