The strength of childlike fantasy and imagination allows Paula to travel through various dream lands. She crosses the Land of Circles, of a Thousand Corners, of Red Tones and the Land of Headunder. Nowhere is she allowed to be herself. Rather, she must always fit in. Back safe and sound in the Land of Soft Pillows – her bed – she is not the only one who has learned the importance of tolerance and the courage to be different. Every night the white bear guards the little girl's bed and takes away her fear of the dark by bringing brightness to the dark night. One night a black bear takes his place. As a protector from the background, he helps the little girl overcome her fear of the dark by helping her feel comfortable in it.
