It's been barely two years since the national festivities in Budapest were marred by cries of "Gypsies into the Danube" and "filthy Jews". The radical right-wingers were thinking of the atrocities of 1944, when hundreds of Hungarian Jews were shot and thrown into the Danube. Are slogans like this now a part of everyday life in Hungary? Is the failure of the Communist dictatorship to come to terms with the past responsible for the current rise of anti-Semitism and nationalism in Hungary? Will the political triumph of the right-wing populists encourage the revival of old enmities?
