The artist lives and works
in Baroda / Bombay / Calcutta / Mysore / Rotterdam / Trivandrum
Thu, Aug 11–Sun, Aug 28, 2005
4000 Kilos of Basmati Rice, metal cubes containing painted cast-iron figures of Hindu right-wing fundamentalists, persons in camouflage who respond to the click of a mouse, the multiplied self-image of a man inside the trial room of an up-market shopping mall in an Indian metropolis: Gallery Mirchandani + Steinruecke, Bombay, in cooperation with the House of World Cultures, Berlin, presents Installation, Photography, Painting and New Media Art by ten artists of Indian origin.
Theories of globalisation and postmoderism have explored the diverse databank of sources used by these artists, and the validity of their social, political and cultural contexts, with the theories often becoming ‘larger’ than the work of art. "The Artist Lives And Works" attempts to steer the attention back to the art, and the individuality of the artist, and to remind us of the intensely and richly practical nature of art, as an exploration of the inner world of the mind.
