Caribbean Whispers, © Edgardo Rudnitzky

In the Foyer of the House, Argentinian sound artist Edgardo Rudnitzky is presenting an alternative to Caribbean package deals. For who doesn't think of blue skies, white beaches, cigars and coconuts at the mention of the Caribbean? This common view ignores the linguistic and social diversity of the archipelago. How does daily life sound in the countless creole languages? What sounds can be heard on the streets of Havana, in San José on Puerto Rico, Fort-de-France on Martinique, and Port-au-Prince on Haiti? What are the subjects of daily conversation? With the aid of a few acoustic tricks, the foyer columns recreate the island world of the Caribbean. Paradoxically, headphones, that symbol of private listening, provide access to daily life in the Caribbean. In the hubbub of conversation, people approaching the sound objects can discover for themselves everyday life on the islands. Rudnitzky's compositions and installations have already been played and shown at the Yokohama Triennial, the Venetian Biennial and Prospect 1 in New Orleans.
