The cornet player and electronic musician Rob Mazurek belongs to today’s most exciting figures of the avant-garde scene, a cross between jazz, electronics and post-rock. After many years in Chicago with the bands Chicago Underground Trio, Isotope 217 and as a producer of avant-garde legend Bill Dixon, he now shows us with his new Brazilian band Sao Paulo Underground just how formative an influence Masekelas 1970s funk phase has been on his music.

The drummer Louis Moholo-Moholo, himself a legend of the South African jazz scene, is more at home in the avant-garde sector. In 1967, together with the other members of the quintet Blue Notes, he was forced to move to the UK for refusing to abide by the rules of segregation. He further developed the mixture of Bebop and Kwela sound, incorporating it into the Afro-Jazz-Big-Band-Brotherhood of Breath. And although Masekela and Moholo-Moholo stem from the same scene, they have never stood together on stage. A situation that might be remedied by their meeting in the Haus?
