Kenzaburō Ōe will be reading from his new novel 'Sayonara my books!' which has just been published in German. Ōe is one of the most important figures in contemporary Japanese literature who has been repeatedly engaging with political and philosophical issues throughout his numerous novels, short stories and essays. In 1994, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for creating 'an imagined world, where life and myth condense to form a disconcerting picture of the human predicament today.'

The reading will be held in Japanese and in German, by Kenzaburō Ōe and the German actor Wanja Mues.

Ōe was invited for the 10th anniversary celebrations of the Samuel Fischer Guest Lecturing series, as part of which Ōe was teaching from 1999 to 2000 at the Free University in Berlin.
