The metropolitan port is an exception in France for a number of reasons. If one asks: Where is the best place for immigrants to live? The frequent response is: ‘In Marseilles, the most beautiful city in the world’.

The Mediterranean city has a unique sound-culture, which continues where Hip-Hop left off and assimilates regional history and influences from outside Europe – Massilia Sound System being a prime example. The contrast between the centre and the banlieue is less marked here that elsewhere in France: culture and politics are more likely to find a public forum in Marseilles. The Panel will present examples illustrating Marseilles’ distinct development, which would have been inconceivable had the city not been located by the sea.
