Stella Chiweshe describes herself as a “rebel” and who would disagree? Her rebellion consists of an intensive study and the consequent expansion of the mbira’s potentials. The artist, who lives in Zimbabwe and Berlin, elicits holistic soundscapes from the instrument, which she accompanies, comments on, and counterpoints with rhythmic chanting or melismatic melodies. Chiweshe continues to rebel against the conventions of traditional forms while breathing new life into them.
Elektrisk Guitar is the sober and simple title of the first album made by Rolf Hansen under his real name. On it, the guitarist, known as Il Tempo Gigante in the alternative folk scene, expresses his jazz influences and his interest in experimental sound art. But his music is also committed to minimalism: With just a few notes, Hansen’s playing spans unimagined spaces in which one can get wonderfully lost. The sober title conceals an ecstatic experience.
