John Akomfrah’ s passionate portrait of British cultural theorist Stuart Hall, who died in 2014, examines his relevance to the black diaspora in the UK as well as Hall’s trailblazing ideas on cultural hegemony.

The history of the scholar and activist from the New Left is told with the help of interview excerpts and television recordings of Hall himself — the documentary’s associative collage technique resembles a jazz improvisation by Miles Davis, whose music provides the soundtrack.
