A synthesis of jazz and South Indian Karnataka – beyond Ravi Shankar’s sitar tones or Miles Davis’s “On the Corner”: This was the sound the American saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa set out to make after hearing the album “Saxophone Indian Style” from the Karnataka master Kadri Gopalnath. Together with guitarist Rez Abbasi, the two musicians have developed a playing style combining South Indian music with the harmonic framework of jazz.
Jazz, tradition and imagination: the daughter of a Bengali father and a British mother, Zoe Rahman studied classical piano at Oxford and Jazz at Berklee.
On the trail of an almost forgotten jazz era in Kolkata
