Leandro Roque de Oliveira carries his alias Emicida, an amalgam of Emcee and “homicida” (Portuguese for murderer) as a sign of the countless battles he has won, with his fans in the suburbs of São Paulo worshipping him as the killer.

He began his career with his parent’s equipment who used to organise local Black Music parties - a career which has catapulted him from the margins of Brazilian society to its centre. Emicida has appeared at the major festivals of Brazil “Rock in Rio” and “Starts With You” – Music and Arts Festival, as well as at Montreux. Throughout he has stuck to his progressive political message, accompanied by the finest beats that Brazilian Hip Hop has to offer. In the midst of the international football hype, Emicida lends his voice to the demands for social change, supporting the mass protests against extravagance and corruption.
