Sprache und Wissen

Curated by Marcel Beyer

Talks, performances, dialogues, readings

Apr 8 & 9, 2016

An initiative of the Ernst Schering Foundation

Language creates order, while at the same time allowing us to enter into non-existent worlds. Used by the sciences as an authentification instrument, in literature it fires an imagination capable of leaving all facts behind it.

In which aesthetic, poetic, prosaic, and narrative forms can our thinking express itself? Can science be “translated” into literature? Which narrative forms do the sciences cultivate? Are the “languages” of music and art ultimately closer to the sciences than to literature?

Two days with readings, performances, and talks explore the aesthetic allure of the factual, trace how language acts as a tool and mediator of self understanding and knowledge of the world, how it enables us to manipulate real and imaginary things—and how language sometimes plays its own game according to inscrutable rules.
