Alexandra Toland is a visual artist and environmental planner. She is a PhD candidate in the DFG Graduate Research Program “Perspectives on Urban Ecology III” at the Technische Universität Berlin, Dept. of Soil Protection, and co-chair of the German Soil Science Society’s (DBG) Commission on Soils in Education and Society. In her artistic practice, Alex explores social and cultural issues of urban soils and landscapes and has exhibited in Europe and the United States. She has worked as a freelance photographer for the environmental visualization firm Lenne 3D from 2006 – 2008 and participated as a design researcher at the Wriezener Park Open Space Lab in Berlin-Friedrichshain from 2005 – 2009.
