Nollywood

Film Festival

Second only to the oil industry, the production of videos is Nigeria’s biggest labour market. Approximately 1,400 films are made there every year – which means that statistically, at least, Nigeria has the largest film industry in the world.

One reason why Nollywood is so successful is because its productions target the home market: soaps, action, comedy, horror films and supernatural phenomena – the Yoruba, the Haussa and the Igbo. European ideas of African cinema – influenced by Arthouse Productions and film – are turned upside down here.
