Ten protagonists of the New York literary scene read at the House of World Cultures: famous voices and newcomers, novelists and poets. Polyphony in all respects – these authors offer insights into the diversity of cultural, ethnic and social affiliations that make up life in New York. They tell of worlds between cultures, of experience at the margins of society, and they search for forms through which to portray the complexity of our globalised present.
E. L. Doctorow was born in the Bronx to Russian Jewish parents in 1931. The heritage of the musical and literary (high) culture of Europe resonates in the complex composition and the rich relationships of his historical novels. He achieved his international breakthrough in 1975 with "Ragtime", a novel about the social tensions in New York at the turn of the 20th century. This was followed by, among others, "Billy Bathgate" and "City of God". At the House Doctorow will read from his latest novel, "The March", his grand Civil War epic, winner of the 2006 PEN/Faulkner Award.
