Darno

Darno

was born in 1966 in Cilacap, East Java and has been interested in gamelan music since his childhood. Following studies at the art academy STSI in Surakarta, he worked as an assistant at the same institute, a few years later to become a lecturer for gamelan music. Darno then made a name for himself as an exceptional interpreter of gamelan, which lead to numerous collaborations with other composers. All the while, he continued to develop his own musical language. In addition to numerous dance accompaniments and works for gamelan ensembles, Darno has also composed various choral arrangements of traditional songs.

“I think that it’s an important requirement for a composer to be in line with his times, but also to react to his surroundings; in my case the Javanese culture in the area around Banyumas. My work springs from this realm of opposing tensions.” Darno
