Jimmie Durham

Jimmie Durham was an artist, writer and activist. In the 1970s, he was an organizer and member of the Central Council of the American Indian Movement and director of the International Indian Treaty Council. Following his political activity, he turned to the fine arts – first as a poet and later with sculptures that addressed colonial stereotypes of Indigenous populations. He was awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 58th Venice Biennale in 2019.
