The first New Alphabet School in the new year deals with practices of healing

Gaps, holes and erasures in historiography leave eerie collective wounds. Beyond material compensation, are forms of restitution conceivable in the context of the Black Atlantic and the history of Africa considering that lost memories, relationships and opportunities can never be completely restored? Can colonial wounds be healed?

The online program, consisting of lectures, video screenings and sound performances, is dedicated to practices of healing from the African diaspora and folklore, to therapeutic and shamanistic remedies and to indigenous, decolonial and feminist techniques with transformative potential. What role can healing practices play in maintaining personal and societal well-being?

Contributors include Ibaaku, Tabita Rezaire, Lionel Manga

Information about the program at

The New Alphabet School is a collaborative, self-organized school for practice-based research. Its aim is to bring different academic disciplines into a dialogue with the arts and activism through joint action. In collaboration with partner institutions around the world, the school’s workshops, artistic contributions and lectures analyze local infrastructures to study the conditions of contemporary knowledge production and to learn from and with one another. Each edition of the school is dedicated to one knowledge practice. In 2021, these focus on African diaspora and decolonial practices of #Healing; processes of self-organization and #Instituting; the concept of #Survivance as a continuation of indigenous histories; resistive forms of literary #Transmitting as well as how activist groups can produce #Community Building.
