The Mississippi is the cradle of American music. In July and August, the Wassermusik festival is devoted to the river’s history and present. With jazz, funk, blues, cajun, zydeco, R&B, folk and more, Berlin audiences can experience the full range of Mississippi music on the roof terrace of HKW over four weekends.
The Mississippi River traverses the United States from north to south, a prime example of an Anthropocene landscape: People settled along the river even a thousand years ago. It served as a traffic artery for the plantation economy and slavery. Jazz and funk were born in New Orleans, the blues in its delta and rock ‘n’ roll in Memphis. Wassermusik 2022 considers the importance of the river for the history of music. It investigates whether these places on its banks still occupy exceptional creative status and what is being produced there today.
The opening of Wassermusik on July 16 is part of the Kultursommerfestival, free tickets for this evening will be available online from July 1.
