In der Ausstellung werden die Ambivalenzen zwischen kolonialer Gewaltherrschaft und den Utopien der Moderne vorgestellt: wie stark zivilisatorische und modernistische Utopien im Kolonialismus begründet sind, die Brüche im Kolonialismus und der Widerstand gegen ihn. Die Ausstellung macht Ereignisse, Projekte, Aktionen und Visionen plastisch, die im Moment der Dekolonisierung zwischen Nordafrika und Europa wirksam waren - und es auch heute noch sind. So werden die Geschichten von Bewohnern, Architekten, Kolonialisten und Wissenschaftlern nach gezeichnet, die in die Auseinandersetzung um Moderne und Modernisierung involviert waren.

Architekturmodelle, Grafiken und Pläne von Georges Candilis, Michel Écochard, Alison und Peter Smithson bis Le Corbusier umreißen die Visionen und Konzepte der modernistischen Utopien. Selten gezeigte filmische Zeitdokumente und zeitgenössische künstlerische Arbeiten von Kader Attia und Hassan Darsi spiegeln die historische Entwicklung. Fotografische Arbeiten von Monique Hervo, Loïk Prat über Robert Doisneau und Willy Ronis wie auch Plakate und Flugblätter reflektieren die ästhetischen Annäherungen an die post-koloniale Situation und ihre politischen Kämpfe.

Die Ausstellung führt durch Kapitel wie „Atelier Afrique“ - eingeleitet mit dem Plakat “Der Kolonialsoldat: Erbauer des Imperiums“ - oder „Transnationaler Kolonialismus“. In „Architekten auf der Reise“ werden die orientalisierenden Darstellungen Le Corbusiers mit der Malerei CHAIBIA’s konfrontiert, oder in „Operation Million“ die Planer des preiswerten Massenwohnbaus wie auch die Einwohner marokkanischer Bidonvilles und französischer Banlieues in Aktion gezeigt. Darüber hinaus wurden gemeinsam mit dem Medienkollektiv Labor k3000, Studierenden der Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien und der Architekturfakultät der Delft University of Technology Interviews, Fotoarbeiten, Videos und Modelle speziell für die Ausstellung neu produziert.
