Su-Mei Tse is inspired by one of the first Dada films “The Return to Reason”, directed by Man Ray in 1923, and explores the nostalgia, the blurred memories. In a rehearsal studio for the Cirque du Soleil, Myriam Yates observes six gymnasts training for a trapeze performance, and directs a formal dialogue between training studio structures and bodies. The fruit of collaboration between Merce Cunningham and Charles Atlas, “Coast Zone” was filmed in 1983 in a space that allowed depth of field and quite a mobile camera that can move with lightness and discretion between 13 dancers. Exemplifying the idea by Merce Cunningham, the dancers move in an autonomous fashion, the composition by Larry Austin called Beachcomber is played by John Cage, Martin Kalye, Takehisa Kosugi and David Tudor. Jean-François Neplaz cuts video archives of workers in the naval construction site of La Ciotat, filmed on December 24th, 1991, with images of the contemporary dance company Ex-Nihilo rehearsing in public space.
