Contemporary visual art always moves at the interface between aesthetic, social and political issues and reflects the progressive developments of production and distribution. In our time, it is increasingly difficult to discern between documentary and fictional approaches. With a selection of more than 100 previously unpublished international films from 40 countries, most of them premiering in Germany, Rencontres Internationales Paris/Berlin open a critical and forward-looking perspective on these practices in film and art.
The festival will present works by globally renowned artists and filmmakers as well as by young talents whose works will be shown for the first time in Berlin. In addition to the film screenings, workshops, panels and conversations with international artists, filmmakers and experts invite the audience to discover and reflect on new documentary, fictional and multimedia approaches. In 2015, filmmakers such as Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Pedro Costa, La Ribot, Lamia Joreige, Clément Cogitore, Adel Abidin, Laure Prouvost, Lina Selander, Sarah Vanagt, Thom Andersen, Mauro Herce and Philippe Grandrieux responded to the curators’ invitations.
This year’s festival will be held in Paris in March before making a stop for the tenth time in Berlin at HKW in June 2017.
Rencontres Internationales Paris/Berlin are curated by Nathalie Hénon and Jean-François Rettig and in cooperation with Haus der Kulturen der Welt.
