The influential theorist and public intellectual Edward W. Said produced a body of work that, right up to the present, resonates worldwide in a variety of fields. On the 10th anniversary of his death, this interdisciplinary symposium seeks to reread his works—from “Orientalism” (1978) to “On Late Style” (posthumously, 2006)—with a view to today’s cultural and political realities, including those in the Arab world. Said’s ideas have continued their journeys across diverse territories to be interpreted and adapted both within and outside of academia. Using formats that take up Said’s interdisciplinary method, the symposium will reflect on themes ranging from “Orientalism Traps” and “Engagement, Resistance and Imagination” to “Power, Weakness and Agency” and “Beyond the Limits of Power.”
