Society in the Making

How can new scopes for action be developed in the face of global challenges? Flight and displacement put the question of the role played by civil societies today on the agenda.

Digital empowerment, housing concepts of the future: these are just some of the tasks today’s societies must face.

Haus der Kulturen der Welt explores these topics in conferences, congresses, workshops and various events. For example, in 2016 the congress Civil Society 4.0 – Refugees and Digital Self Organization brought refugees, activists and developers, theorists and artists together to develop action strategies and reflect critically on the current situation.

In the summer of 2016, a conference with the JugendtheaterBüro Berlin was the culmination of the three-year project KulTür auf!, in which young people and young artists, together with large and small theaters, researched access to and exclusion from the Berlin cultural scene and debated on behalf of a cultural remix.

Using methods of critical cartography, residents of the refugee accommodation Haus Leo collect information that is relevant to new arrivals in Berlin. The digital map and app Arriving in Berlin provide guidance for newly arrived refugees and provide insights into their experiences.

How can we find pictures and words for what is going on in the cities? In participatory projects within the framework of We Decide How We Reside (2015), residents and artists examined their housing situations in Berlin, Istanbul and Marseille and designed images for self-determined living.
