Unfolding before the eyes of the world public, captured in a flood of iconic images, and shown on television thousands of times, the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 marked a global caesura with far-reaching consequences.

Ten years after 9/11, the debates in the series “Forum Berlin” provided an opportunity to discuss the effects of these pivotal events on the present and future. To what extent did 9/11 bring about a change in our perception of the world, and to what degree did it alter political thinking and action as well as the codes of language and images by which we access current realities of world politics and society?

Opening keynote von Elias Khoury:
A Decade of Misunderstanding (28-05-2011)

How has political terminology changed, and in what categories of security are counterterrorist measures, not to mention those of “classical” security policy, communicated and legitimized? Must we ascribe a new significance to the factor of religion, or even speak of a “return of the religious” in world politics and society?

In international and interdisciplinary panels, political scientists, cultural scholars, politicians and media experts discussed the consequences of 9/11 for the volatile interplay of politics, language and images in the twenty-first century.

In the framework of the series:

Forum Berlin
