Online hate speech and conspiracy theories proliferated significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic. How are these digital discourses structured, and how do they circulate? What role do anti-Semitism and racism play in them? And what strategies can help to create awareness and counter hatred?

The brochure Digitaler Hass discusses these questions, introduces the current state of research, and seeks to encourage debates and knowledge transfer in various teaching and learning contexts. It comprises experiences and expertise from academia, culture, and civil society.

With an integrated media archive, the brochure also provides access to contributions from a conference on the topic: during the symposium ‘Digitaler Hass’,, which took place at HKW in September 2022, academics, artists, activists, and experts discussed the spread of hate speech and conspiracy theories and worked together to find strategies to tackle such phenomena. The participants brought knowledge and perspectives from a variety of disciplines—such as AI, political education, critical discourse analysis, anti-racist and anti-anti-Semitism struggles, as well as artistic experiments—into the discussion.

The research project Digital Hate is a cooperation between the Alice Salomon Hochschule Berlin (ASH) and the Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft Berlin (HTW) and is funded by the Institut für angewandte Forschung Berlin (IFAF e.V.). The educational program took place in cooperation with ichbinhier e.V.. Results from two teacher training courses and four school projects were incorporated into the research. The educational program is funded by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media.
